Unix, GNU Not Unix, Linux, and What Next?
06/03/2013 @ 7:30 pm - 11:00 pm
What’s with the “*” in *nix? Why all the fondness for GNUs and cryptic names with “X” in? What is it about the crazy acronyms from years ago that we still use today?
… Well that’s quite a story spanning half a century already. There is no way I can give such a story the detail and depth it deserves in a mere one hour talk. However, I do hope to give a few highlights and something of the feel and ethos for a little of the early history behind a large and ever more significant part of the IT world as we presently know it!
(For encore, we are honored to have Dr Richard Stallman talking this weekend and Monday.)
Unics -> Unix -> And beyond
This is a merely lightly technical and lightly historical talk to give a flavour of *nix times gone by.
{Un*x,*NIX,*N?X,GNU/Linux,*(x|X)}
All at our usual real world down to earth venue:

Food is also served up until 8pm.
Depending on warmth and numbers, we’ll be huddled in the lower area by the bar. Or if warm and crowded, we’ll be above the restaurant area at the back. Just look for the Linux mags and gadgets (or ask the friendly bar staff where to find us 🙂 ).
